Protecting Conscience Rights of Health Care Providers
An HHS (U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services) rule went into effect on Jan. 20, 2009. It protects the conscience rights of health care providers who choose not to participate in abortion.
However, the new administration plans to “rescind” (i.e., cancel) that rule. First, though, a 30-day comment period is open to the public at http://www.regulations.gov.
The comment period opened officially on March 10 and closes on April 9. Please search for “HHS_FRDOC_0001-0050″ at www.regulations.gov. There you will see the document titled:
Rescission of the Regulation entitled “Ensuring That Department of Health and Human Services Funds Do Not Support Coercive or Discriminatory Policies or Practices in Violation of Federal Law”
It’s important that many people, especially those in the health care field, submit comments urging the government to KEEP the rule intact.
